Anyone who’s taken my Closet Makeover Program, knows that I love style and fashion, but also embrace a philosophy of minimalism centered on having the perfect amount of items for your lifestyle and your space. My workaround for these two sometimes opposing forces has been to embrace The French 5-Piece Wardrobe System.

In a nutshell, this approach constrains me to selecting no more than five new pieces to add each season, and with so few new additions I don’t have to sacrifice on quality or cost like I would if I was changing everything out each season or each year. Because my closet is made up primarily of neutral, well-made pieces that both work year-round and will last for a long time, this approach gives me the chance to add a pop of color, print, or a trendier item from time to time, while still maintaining a core wardrobe that is timeless. I also do my best to part with an equal number of items so my closet stays streamlined. That means if I invest in a new pairs of shoes, I sell or donate a similar pair of shoes: One-in one-out!

I love the limitation of picking five pieces or less each season, because it forces me to clarify wardrobe gaps, and invest thoughtfully – no more impulse buys for me!

Fall is by far my favorite season, and I typically invest in a new pair of booties, a warmer layer or two, and a few new tops. I have a stable of favorite women-owned brands I love to support (Mille, Doen, Jenni Kayne), which also helps eliminate overwhelm and decision fatigue. I spend a little time browsing around a select group of sites before pulling the trigger on my favorites – five tops. I also space out my purchasing since I’m focused on investing in items that are high quality, and tend to be pricier.

I’m sharing the five finalists for this Fall below!

Piece #1: This 70’s Inspired Velvet Blazer

I’ll admit this one is a bit of a risk, but I love the blush color, and think this piece would elevate and spice up my classic jeans + top uniform.

Piece #2: These Cheetah Mule Flats*

It took me a loooong time to come around and embrace wearing flats. I started with these woven mules, and I’m excited to add these cheetah mules to my fall wardrobe. They’re just a little bit out of my comfort zone, and I think they’ll be a fun addition to my monochromatic wardrobe.

Piece #3: This Painter’s Blouse

I’m a sucker for a billowy blouse tucked into old vintage jeans, and this sweet printed blouse is right up my ally. Even though it doesn’t exactly scream fall, I know I’ll wear it all year round, and it will be great for layering with a chunky cardigan, or light jacket this fall.

Piece #4: This Cozy Cashmere Fisherman Sweater *

This recycled cashmere pullover was my #1 pick for fall, and I can’t wait to wear it on cool autumn days with jeans and booties. I ordered it a few sizes bigger so it would feel especially cozy.

Piece #5: These Pull-On Cozy Shearling Booties

I’ve waited years to splurge on these beauties, and decided that it was finally time to take the plunge. I can’t wait to wear these on cooler days, and plan to protect them with a weather-guard spray so they can survive the rain as well – cozy days, here I come!

I’d love to know what you have your eye on this season. Have you experimented with trying a capsule wardrobe? Is your closet in need of a little refresh? Click here.

*I’m so excited to partner with Jenni Kayne as an ambassador for the brand. I’m very selective about brand partnerships, and only promote products I truly wear and love. These two items were gifted to me as part of our brand partnership. Use code Shira20 for 20% off anything in store or site wide.
